Article #1 - Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace

By: Dionne Gregory

Introduction

Mental health is an increasingly important topic in the workplace. It is estimated that, at any point in time, one in six working age people will be suffering from mental illness, which is associated with very high personal and economic costs. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of sickness absence and long-term work incapacity in across the world and is one of the main health related reasons for reduced work performance.

Individuals with mental health problems, and their caregivers, are some of the most stigmatised and marginalised groups in the workplace and often miss out on the many benefits good work can offer. There is increasing evidence that workplaces can play an important and active role in maintaining the mental health and well-being of their workers. Every business has a legal and moral responsibility to provide a safe and fair workplace for their employees. Creating a mentally healthy workplace has many benefits for both employers and employees. A well-designed workplace should support individual mental health and lead to reduced absenteeism, increased employee engagement and improved productivity.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is a fundamental aspect of human well-being that encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social states. It is an integral part of how we think, feel, act, and interact with ourselves, others, and the world around us. Just as physical health is crucial for overall wellness, mental health plays a significant role in our ability to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Over the past few years, mental health has come to describe not only severe mental conditions, but also an aspect of overall health. As a result, the general population’s understanding and categorization of mental health has broadened (Spector, 2020).

At its core, mental health involves a delicate balance of emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and coping mechanisms. It encompasses a wide spectrum of experiences, ranging from positive mental states like happiness, contentment, and resilience, to challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Mental health is not static; it can fluctuate over time in response to various life circumstances, experiences, and internal processes.

Recognizing the importance of mental health involves understanding its impact on every aspect of our lives – from our relationships and work performance to our overall quality of life. Just as we take steps to maintain our physical health through exercise, nutrition, and medical care, it's equally essential to prioritize our mental health through self-care, seeking support when needed, and cultivating healthy habits that contribute to emotional well-being.

Research and statistics highlight the significance of addressing mental health issues in the workplace:

Prevalence of Mental Illness: Approximately one in six working-age individuals will experience mental illness at any given point. This statistic emphasizes the widespread nature of mental health challenges among the workforce.

Personal and Economic Costs: Mental illness is associated with substantial personal suffering, and it also carries significant economic costs due to decreased productivity, absenteeism, and long-term incapacity.

Impact on Work Performance: Mental illness ranks as a leading cause of sickness absence and reduced work performance. It affects an individual's ability to focus, make decisions, and engage effectively in their tasks.

Stigma and Marginalization: People dealing with mental health problems and their caregivers often face stigma and marginalization in the workplace. This not only affects their well-being but also hinders their access to opportunities and support.

Workplace Responsibility: Businesses have a legal and moral obligation to provide a safe and equitable work environment. Ensuring employees' mental health is part of this responsibility.

Benefits of a Mentally Healthy Workplace: Designing a workplace that supports mental health has numerous benefits. It can lead to reduced absenteeism, higher levels of employee engagement, improved productivity, and overall better organizational performance.

Employee Well-Being: A workplace that prioritizes mental health fosters a sense of well-being among employees. When employees feel valued and supported, they are more likely to be motivated, satisfied, and emotionally invested in their work.

Reduced Absenteeism: Addressing mental health concerns proactively can lead to decreased absenteeism. When employees feel mentally well, they are less likely to take sick days due to mental health-related issues.

Increased Engagement: A positive work environment that promotes mental well-being enhances employee engagement. Engaged employees are more committed to their roles and contribute actively to the organization's success.

Improved Productivity: Employees' mental health significantly influences their ability to perform tasks efficiently and creatively. A supportive work environment can lead to higher productivity levels.

Conclusion

Recognizing the significance of mental health in the workplace, organizations are increasingly investing in mental health initiatives, creating awareness, and implementing policies to support their employees' mental well-being. By fostering a mentally healthy workplace, businesses not only fulfill their obligations but also cultivate an environment where employees can thrive personally and professionally, contributing to the overall growth and success of the organization.

  5. An interesting article with a great topic to discuss which is necessary today in busy lives styles. The study of national and global well-being has drawn increasing attention in recent years. For instance, Goal 3 of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN is "good health and wellbeing" (United Nations, 2015). The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which publishes the "How's Life" report every two years, provides a country-by-country overview of national level well-being indices (OECD, 2015).

It is important that we all understand the importance of mental health be it in a professional or personal environment and understand the support we have to overcome. According to the WHO report addressing mental health in Sri Lanka: A new mental health policy for 2020–2030
has been approved by the Cabinet. The previous mental health policy was
developed for the years 2005–2015, through which many of the current successes were
possible. The currently valid Mental Health Act is more than 70 years old and does
not cover the overall aspects of mental health. Patient’s rights are not specified.
Amendments have been proposed since 2007, but the draft is still being improved.
The National Action Plan for Mental Health has been developed.
